A History of Sound – Vache Baroque (CPD)
A History of Sound is Vache Baroque’s flagship music education project for KS2 pupils and teachers. It consists of an interactive professional performance (c. 55 minutes), a hands-on rotating workshop session (c. 35 minutes) and a resources pack (content for up to 6 lessons).
“This was the best workshop we’ve had in a very long time. The musicians/cast were just exceptional and hilariously funny. The children genuinely enjoyed it. Everything was so well-rehearsed and presented in a very humorous and informative manner.” – KS2 teacher feedback
Our goal is to increase access to and interest in music (particularly classical) by breaking down barriers relating to musical knowledge and training. Our cast and creative team have co-devised this project together with young people and teachers. We work in partnership with teachers and local organisations such as Bucks Music Trust to help young people overcome barriers they may be facing to engage with music, ensuring sustained impact. We also want to support teachers delivering music lessons, especially non-specialists who have reported feeling out of their depth or lacking in confidence with key musical skills like keeping rhythm and singing.
“I felt like I was in a different world” / “Super duper amazingly fun”- KS2 pupil feedback
This CPD session will delve into our Resources Pack, providing non-specialist teachers with the confidence and inspiration to deliver this material to children in years 5 and 6. Each delegate will receive a complimentary printed copy of our ‘A History of Sound’ Resources Pack.

Please note, although this Resources Pack has been designed such that it can work in isolation, we strongly encourage schools to engage with our live workshop-show too. Please feel free to book in a 15-minute one-to-one slot with us at the CPD event to discuss this further.

CPD Session Leader/s: Jonathan Darbourne & Betty Makharinsky (Vache Baroque co-founders)
Vache Baroque co-founders Jonathan Darbourne and Betty Makharinsky are both professional classical singers. Alongside busy performing careers and curating VB’s artistic programme, they both love to teach and mentor young people. They have extensive experience in music education, ranging from peripatetic instrumental and singing teaching to running children’s choirs, workshops, and young artist residencies. They have prepared many pupils for performance and theory exams and regularly work alongside some of the Uk’s top choral animateurs. From modern pop to mediaeval chant, no style of music is off limits when it comes to lighting the live-music spark for those they work with!
Vache Baroque
We are a group of professional musicians producing ground-breaking performances of 17th- and 18th-century music and drama. Our events are entertaining, dynamic, and informative, and we specialise in mixing together traditional and contemporary art forms in unusual and thought-provoking ways.
As a registered UK charity, we build connections with young and disadvantaged people through both live and online projects, offering them inspiring opportunities and creative agency to make art relevant to their lived experience.
All our activities have a focus on accessibility and collaboration, aiming to attract a younger and more diverse range of people to the power of high-quality Baroque-era art.
